Hey guys, just posting to get some insight, maybe some advice. So I have a 14-year-old very small calico cat, she’s very high energy and kind of a glutton. There’s very little difference between her personality now and when she was a kitten. She has never had issues with her urination, but she does have chronic inflammatory bowel disease. The treatment for this is steroids, which she’s only had two rounds of before, and the vets suggested I go a dietary route with probiotics since the steroids can cause health problems later on if used too consistently. It has made her poop kind of funky, but she doesn’t appear to be in any discomfort and is always energetic and ready to eat. This morning she was obnoxious as usual, running around and jumping off stuff, when I went to check my email she went to her freshly cleaned the litter box and begin to strain, hopped out, hopped in and strained again. She repeated this behavior multiple times, and I picked up pretty instantly that this could be a UTI. I planned to take her to the vet as soon as my husband came home, about three hours later. She continued this weird potty behavior but was still very energetic and eating and drinking. Once he got home we took off to the walk in clinic. I didn’t want to wait to set up an appointment since that’s the closest one I could get would be Thursday. I wanted to get her in immediately because I know how bad these can turn. We get there and I believe they did a mini panel on her (they did this instead of a full blood test because she had one about two months ago due to her G.I. and everything came back good.) with an SDMA. Upon checking there was no urine in her bladder, but there was I believe inflammation or infection/irritation. Obviously something causing her discomfort that she was trying to relieve by attempting to pee. They sent me home with the following medications, all in liquid form: Augmentin, Gabapentin, Prazosin, and Burenex. They also gave me probiotics and if you cans and two bags of prescription food specialized for her urinary issues. The last worrying thing is that when I got home, despite not being medicated yet she was extremely lethargic and grouchy. They told me to give her the antibiotics after she ate, but my cat who is always happy to eat wouldn’t even take treats. She was happy to take them right before her trip. Instead she just wanted to slink off to sleep after one more bout of straining. I suppose it could be the stress but she just looked so lethargic and not like herself, she’s been to the vet plenty of times and poked and prodded but usually she’s perfectly perky as soon as she gets out of the carrier. This time was different and I don’t know if it has to do with the vet trip. A few hours later I called to see if I could go ahead and give her the medication to provide some relief since she wasn’t eating and they told me to go ahead with three of them, since the antibiotics should be given with food, and if she doesn’t want to eat in the morning, bring her back. One of the medications which was meant for pain relief they told me could act as a sedative, and so she seems even more tired and out of it right now. I’m just worried that this thing is getting bad fast. Either that or this vet trip just really stressed her out. What do you guys think.
