I adopted a cat the day before yesterday from the humane society. Yesterday, I noticed she was puking and not eating or drinking, so I took advantage of the free wellness appt they provide within 5 days of adoption. Turns out this cat has some sort of blockage in her intestines, an enlarged spleen, and bronchitis. The vet confirms that it was something that happened before adoption. The resulting bill is going to be enormous. Do I have any rights to demand the humane society cover the cost of treatment? They adopted her out to me with a clean bill of health that was an obvious lie. It seems unethical to adopt very sick animals out while claiming they’re healthy, then put the immediate resulting vet bill in the adopted, or else put the animal down. I don’t know what to do but I’m looking at thousands of dollars I can’t afford yet.
