I have this amazing blind cat that is the sweetest, most cuddly and needy cat in the world. He has been blind since he was just a little baby kitten and finds his way around the world like a normal sighted cat.
Anyways, I don't sleep with him in my bedroom because he has a bad habit of hair licking and pawing so he gets the boot every night. In the morning, as soon as my alarm goes off he starts howling at the door for some breakfast. It's ALWAYS right after he hears this alarm (standard Google phone alarm sound.)
Tonight I was watching a TV show cuddled up on the couch with him curled up in my lap sleeping. While distracted on Reddit, in the show the person has their phone alarm go off and it's exactly the same chime as my morning alarm. My cat immediately pops his head up from a dead sleep and starts trying to locate where the sound is coming from. I look at him and reassure him that I'm right here and it's just the tv. It took me a second to even realize that it was the alarm sound that got him flustered.
For some reason this just totally got me. He mainly interacts with the world through sound, and that mundane thing to me like my particular alarm sound means so much to him. It means breakfast and mommy cuddles to him. It means stimulus and love. It's enough to wake him from a dead sleep because that particular tone excites him because it means I'm coming to get him.
I don't care if many people read this or find it notable, I just was so taken aback for some reason and it sent me into deep thought about his reality as a blind cat and what things have meaning to him.
I'm sure all of you and your pets share these moments too and that's what makes owning a pet so incredible. They surprise you all the time with their intelligence. They are all such individual creatures that sometimes it feels like they have the complexity of a person and you can understand them as if they had the power of speech. You know their likes an dislikes, what things have meaning to them..
Anyways, thanks for your time and please comment any stories you may have about your pets whether it be when you realized how important something was to them or when you were touched by their intelligence.
