Crating cat at night so I can sleep?

So, I have two cats. One is mine that I've had for about 5 years. She doesn't really cause me any problems as she's old (at least probably 7 or 8) and more mellow. Doesn't really get into trouble, is very careful when walking around things she could knock over, etc. The other is my friend's cat that I'm housing and he's probably about 4 or 5 years old now.

This cat likes to climb on things, knock things off my tables and shelves, try to get into his food bag (even when he has food in his bowl), do parkour off the windowsill, and attack my cat (I THINK he's playing, but my cat seems to hate it and always yowls. she was completely declawed when I found her, so she can't even really defend herself :( ) The thing is, he does this during the daytime, but often, when I go to bed, he'll snoop around for a bit but then he'll lay with me in bed and sleep for quite a while. But a few hours later (usually around 6am, sometimes again later), he'll start up and wake me up. I'm a pretty light sleeper and I have a hard time getting to sleep, and when I don't get enough sleep I get really emotional, lol. I don't mind TOO much when I can sleep in late etc (though i still hate it), but I'm starting a new job in a couple days and I really, really need the sleep if I'm not going to focus and not be prone to crying (rip).

Sometimes I'll put him in the a cage that we have, usually once he wakes me up and I want him to stop, but sometimes before I go to bed. It's too small to have a litterbox in, but big enough he can lay out in (he's not small and he loves to just loaf out in his full length on the floor, and even in the crate on his own volition, lol. I usually put a small bowl of water in there, and he doesn't meow to get out or anything, and he doesn't usually seem in a hurry to go to the litterbox when I let him out in the morning. Is it okay to do this regularly for the full night? or is there some other way to keep him from being crazy and obnoxious at night? I try to play with him, but he really only holds interest in playing on his terms, so it doesn't always work. Help..!

I would like to get him a cat condo and/or a bigger cage, but the apartment I'm in for the time being is really really small and I don't have much floor space.

Sorry for this long post! Any advice is appreciated.

Editing to say that I have googled this topic a few times but most situations mentioned are a bit different and answers seem to vary so...
