Do I have to put my dog down?

So my father and I own a nearly 7 year old Rottweiler. We take good care of him and we pretty much split the work. He's not very well trained as he grew up on a farm and got him after he was almost 3, but we did the best we could with the trainer we got.

Recently he started drinking tons of water and peeing in the house occasionally. We did blood work, full checkup, and a urinalysis. He has diabetes and an ear infection in both ears. At first I thought, no problem, two shots a day is easy, and putting the medication in his ears is a piece of cake. But after doing this for about 3 days now, I've come to realize that there is no way my Dad could do this on his own. He had a stroke 6 years ago and only has use of his left arm and hand. As well as being pretty unhealthy in general.

Every time I have to do the shot, he eats his food like normal, and I get the shot prepped, put his muzzle on, and as soon as I touch him, he starts growling. If I don't let go within like 2 seconds of tenting the skin, he snaps at me. And he is a large, strong dog. The first three shots were okay, but tonight I tried probably 5 times and gave up. He knows that I'm doing something and he doesn't want any part of it.

The biggest problem here is that I'm going to be leaving soon, and this is my father's best friend, as well as mine. But I'm already not around all that much, and within the next 6 months or so, I won't be around at all. It kills me to even think about it, because I know if I left, and we had to put the dog down, my Dad would just be miserable sitting here alone. I really don't know what to do.

I love this dog more than I can describe, and I wish he could just live healthily forever. But the more I think about it, the more it just seems basically impossible to care for his diabetes properly. I'm not always home, and soon I won't be living here at all. And my Dad is not capable of giving these shots at all. Is my only option to put him down?
