How do I get my boyfriend’s dog to stop peeing every time I try to scold her?

Hi,

I just moved in with my boyfriend and he had a dog that’s about 2 years old. She was not a rescue dog, and from what I know he never abused her before we met.

She is about 3 years old now, and has quite a few bad habits. In the middle of the night she will do things like chew up any random thing that happens to be out in the open. I understand that some of this is preventable by hiding things or putting things out of her reach. However, sometimes it is really unavoidable. For instance, the other night she chewed up a nail file that I had set on the coffee table, which isn’t really something that dogs typically find “delicious”. She also manages to find paper towels, and climbs up to reach absolutely anything she can.

I also have a cat and she gets aggressive towards her for no reason. Understand that I’ve had both cats and dogs before and my cat has lived with my dog before. My cat really doesn’t care about my boyfriend’s dog or try to interact with her (both cat and dog are female), my cat has lived with multiple dogs and is used to them. My boyfriends dog literally chases my cat, herds my cat, and even attempts to bite my cat when she comes near my boyfriend or me. When my cat comes near me or my boyfriend, my boyfriend’s dog literally freaks out, non stop jumping and barking and running in circles around us. My cat just ignores this 90% of the time and occasionally swats, but a lot of the time ends up stuck in a corner or something because my boyfriend’s dog won’t let her move.

My boyfriend’s dog also gets territorial towards me when I try to interact with my boyfriend. If he’s at his desk and I try to touch him she gets up on his lap (she’s a Australian Sheppard so not a tiny dog). If we try to cuddle in bed she tries to get between us. I should also mention that when my boyfriend is not around she likes me. She likes to cuddle with me, will cuddle with me if he’s here or not. I also walk her and feed her (have been for several months). I also take her with me on walks and I watch her when my boyfriend is gone. She usually sleeps next to me in bed. But when I try to get close to my boyfriend she always tries to get in the middle of us.

I’m starting to get a little frustrated with this behavior as I am having to replace a lot of things at this point. But every time I try to punish her she just pees immediately. When I say punish I don’t mean that I’m going up and smacking the crap out of her, she pees if I say her name when she’s done something bad. Sometimes she will also try to growl at me or even bite me.

I have been very patient and trying really hard to be patient about this behavior, but I’m starting to get pretty frustrated because we have lived together for about 8 months now and nothing has changed. I have also grown up with dogs, had a dog, and lived with multiple dogs/puppies and I have not encountered this behavior before.

Any advice on how to handle this?
