I have an 18-year-old golden retriever mix that has a large aggressive tumor on her paw. It bleeds constantly so I have to keep cleaned and wrapped with gauze and gentle tape. She has been on daily steroids/antibiotics for 5 months now. I feel completely helpless with the options given to us by the vet. I visited a couple of different vets who all laid out treatment options such as radiation and amputation but gently nudged at euthanasia. Radiation, chemotherapy, and amputation don't seem viable at all at her age. It costs thousands of dollars as well which is why I feel so selfish for not considering it.
She seems good-tempered everyday. She's happy to see me but can no longer follow me around like she used to. She's very arthritic and spends most of the day in her bed. She has a little trouble making it outside to potty. I know she's in pain because the tumor on her paw causes her to limp when she walks. She has somewhat of an appetite when I mix wet food in with her dry food. She used to finish it in one sitting but lately, she's been eating less and less. I am losing my mind over this. When will I know it's time?
