Newly adopted cat and loose stool

Hi Folks,

My boyfriend and I recently adopted a 3 year old female cat about 5 days ago from a local shelter. She is the sweetest little cat and we are completely in love. When we adopted her from the shelter they told us she had been having loose stool for a few days but it didn’t seem to be anything of note.

The first two day she had loose stool, but it was manageable. Since then, she has had two episodes where she has had poop run all the way down her leg and get on her feet and tail. This then leads to her getting poop on our furniture and her blankets. She eventually cleans herself but it takes a little while (couple of hours) so she will just walk around with poop on her. In between the loose stools, she has also had one or two solid poops. She was recently spayed and her stitches are water dissolvable, so I was instructed not to bathe her for a while, but I have been trying to spot clean her as best I can.

Some things to note about her that may/may not be relevant. When we adopted her, most of her teeth had been removed due to gum disease. She also had pretty bad flea dermatitis when dropped off at the shelter, but she has gone through thorough treatment and her skin is mostly healed. I have been giving her a teensy amount of fish oil at night with her food to help with her skin (by recommendation of the shelter) and she also eats mostly soft food because of her teeth. I have also been giving her a cat toothpaste at night to help keep the remaining 4 teeth she has clean.

This is my first time adopting a shelter cat, so I’m unsure if this type of loose stool is normal or not after the stress of being adopted. Her other behaviors are completely normal. She eats fine, is pretty active, and seems to exhibit normal cat behaviors. A few questions:

A) Her first visit is scheduled for two days away. Should I be concerned with trying to move the visit up sooner?

B) Is there anything I can be doing in the meantime to help ease her poops up and/or protect her fur?
