Hi I've moved in to a new place and I brought two farm kittens with me who are not allowed inside. I've constructed a house for them where they can safely sleep and shelter from the elements. All was peaceful until today where I came across two adult cats who came to socialize with my kittens. One is an adult cat who has a collar. It was very skittish so I couldn't see/hear any tags. The other one is an uncollared orange barn cat who I found in a building on the property. The cat is an unneutered male. I'm not sure on my kittens, but I believe one is a male and one is a female so I will be getting them spayed and neutered, and probably vaccinated. I've found a relatively low-cost clinic near me. The orange cat I've noticed seemed to want to claim the cat house and kittens as his, as I saw him hiss at the collared cat to scare it away. I will definitely be getting my kittens fixed so I don't have to support a litter, but I don't really want to pay for an adult cat to be fixed who I have no idea how much longer will be on this earth. I'm considering (humanely) shooting the orange cat to rid myself of the problem. But at the same time I feel like it'd be good to keep the orange cat around. The two kittens although they live in a shelter very close to my house could still become dinner for coyotes or an owl. I feel like maybe the orange cat may serve as some extra protection to the kittens. If I'm around I'll have no problem defending my kittens but since I work nights there's not much I can do. Sorry cat-lovers if the shooting part offends you - it is pretty common practice in rural areas here and I'm not going to pay to have it put down. The orange cat is fairly tame and now that I picked it up and pet it it won't leave me alone! As far as I know it doesn't sleep in the cat house but it may or may not be eating out of the food bowl. Not that cat food is particularly expensive but I would much rather pay to feed two cats instead of three cats. I have no problem with the collared cat being around and obviously won't kill it. But the orange cat I don't know if I want it around or not. suggestions/thoughts?
tl;dr : An adult unneutered farm cat appeared at my house around my two farm kittens and wondering what to do with it.
