Advice for my German Shepherd at night.

Hi there. My husband and I are at a loss with our German Shepherd. We've had him for 3 years. He's 7 years old, and for the last year, he's been playing games with me, it seems. He's been kennel trained, so he sleeps in a pretty big kennel with a bed, to keep him from jogging around the house at night or peeing in the corners of the house.

Just in the last year he's been regularly squealing to get out between 12-4 am.

This is really hard on us, but we love him so we always let him out without question. Recently (or maybe all along) I discovered that he doesn't want out to go to the bathroom. He just wants out to wander around and be outside. (If we don't let him out, he never gives up, so we have to let him out regardless.)

Okay, so we've tried leaving him out from the beginning of the night, but then he barks literally forever. It's a very loud bark. Also, we can't do a doggie door because he will pee in the house when we're not looking.

I need sleep. What do I do?
