Any advice for a howling Italian Greyhound?

My partner and I have an Italian Greyhound who is 5 and a half years. Since being a puppy he has slept in bed with us which (at times hot and uncomfortable) has been mainly fine. My partner is now pregnant and our midwife has advised that we cannot have the dog sleeping in the bed with us whilst shes pregnant, nor when the baby arrives.

This is proving to be extremely difficult. Our dog is fine if left alone in the house for a few hours but he seems completely distressed by being kept downstairs in his own bed overnight. It's only been 3 nights so far but he howls and cries literally until I get out of bed at 7am, all through the night. We can hear him from upstairs even with white noise on full blast and a fan on meaning we're both not getting any sleep. I can handle it while he gets used to it but my pregnant partner needs her sleep more than ever now. He also jumps full force against the door, banging throughout the night, peeing and pooping on the floor when he would never do this when staying with us upstairs.

Obviously this is difficult for us but I worry about how distressed he seems and if the anxiety will have any long-lasting effects on him.

I realise that we have completely babied him (hindsight is 2020) and that his behaviour won't change overnight but if anyone has any tips at all who has been in a similar situation then we would be very grateful.
