So, I started dating my ex about 2.5 years ago. Before I met her, my brother and I got a dog through Craigslist and paid only cash in January 2018 and we didn’t know much I about dog ownership until I met my girlfriend (at the time) about 2 months later (End of February/March 2018). So, we didn’t really know how to take care of our dog so my girlfriend would slowly immerse herself into taking care of the dog such as buying him toys, dog bowls, bandanas, etc. She even started to bathe him and really take full care of him as if he was her own, which it slowly has become as we started to become more serious. Fast forward a few years, we moved in and things got ugly between us and we ended our relationship. Now, dog ownership is the dilemma. I have no paper trail of the original purchase of the dog and my ex eventually started to put her name on all the vet visits(which wasn’t a problem with me at the time because we were together).
More context: I lived in Houston and my ex lived in College Station at the time, which is a city about 1.5 hours from Houston. I would go to College Station weekly just to spend some time and “live” there part time. So my dog would be mostly with her in College Station because me and my brother had full schedules so she would be the primary caretaker in a sense. So, that’s why it wasn’t a big deal if she put her name on the vet visits and paperwork. Essentially, she registered our dog to the vet in College Station under her name.
So, my brother originally spent $600 on the dog and me and him split the original vet costs such as shots, procedures, and other things like food and toys. But slowly, it was me and my ex who started to split the cost of bills such as vet visits, food, and toys.
Present: Now, sense we are split up, I am trying to figure out if I can fight to get the dog back because my ex says that legally the dog is “under” her name because she made the vet in College Station the primary vet clinic where the dog gets seen and she’s the primary for that clinic. Is there any way I can legally challenge ownership and get the dog back or is he rightfully hers?
