I adopted a 2 year old female cat about two weeks ago. She has been just great, except that her poop stinks to high heavens. I have had cats for 15+ years and know what cat poo smells like; hers does not smell normal. Living in an apartment means that our noses get a front row seat every single time she uses the litter box. The smell also lingers on her for a while afterwards.
For litter, we use Tidy Cat litter with Arm and Hammer deodorant powder in a covered box and clean it daily. In terms of food, she eats Purina One dry food throughout the day, a small amount of Fancy Feast wet food at dinner, and Temptations brand treats. When we adopted her, I was told that she had been getting all different foods (basically whatever they had on hand), so we just had to start her on new food with literally no transition. At first I figured that the smell was from her previous diet, the sudden change in food, or the stress of a new environment, but she has adjusted in all other aspects and it still hasn’t gone away after 16 days.
Twice now she has also scooted her butt on the ground and smeared poop across the floor. The first time happened during a thunderstorm so we assumed she just got scared mid-poop, but it doesn’t explain the second time which happened a few days later at night. She is a short haired cat and keeps herself pretty clean, so I don’t think it’s a matter of dingleberries getting stuck in the hair either.
She has no known health issues, has been to the vet for a check up (though we weren’t physically present for the exam due to the pandemic), and had a clean stool check. In the box her poop seems slightly soft but not diarrhea at all. She is otherwise a happy, playful cat, so the vet said to just keep an eye on it.
I’ve been reading up on potential things it could be, including anal sac issues— would a vet have noticed this kind of a problem during a routine check up? Diet could also be another factor. Some pages suggest grain free food, while others say that grain free foods actually increase smelliness. Obviously any diet changes will have to be made gradually. I just need some ideas as to what would help my poor nose.
