How do I get my cat to tolerate my new kitten?

Me and my girlfriend have a 1 year old female cat and we just got a new kitten a week ago. When we brought the new kitten home we kept them separated at first but when they met face to face my older cat started hissing and pawing at the new kitten. so we keep the meetings brief and keep the kitten in her own room mostly.

Things are gradually getting better and the hissing is rare but the second the kitten starts running my older cat will chase it almost like it’s hunting it. If she gets to the kitten it looks like she’s trying to get to her neck which freaks us out and we’ll immediately separate them and put the kitten in her safe room.

The kitten seems to want to leave her room and play and the older cat will be on the other side of the door so it seems like they want to see each other but I don’t know.

Some background on the cats: the older cat was feral before we got her and we’ve had her for a couple months. She’s really sweet and cuddly by herself but when the kitten comes out it’s like a switch goes on in her head. The kitten is 6 weeks and is also sweet and playful.

Is this normal behavior? And is there anything we can do to try to get them used to each other safely?
