About a month ago my family adopted Betty, a very small 4 year old white chihuahua, and I became her primary caretaker. I absolutely love her, she's my baby and I would do anything to keep her safe and healthy.
My family and my uncle's (my father's brother's) family live in the same yard, in houses that are about 2 metres away from each other. The backyard is used by everyone and equally shared. My uncle is working abroad so he isn't of much help in this situation, we're currently only living with my auntie and cousin here.
Two days ago, my auntie brought home Kasey, a small pitbull puppy, about 40 days old and currently the same size as Betty. I grew up around pitbulls as my father used to be a pitbull breeder, and Betty is the only dog we had that wasn't a pitbull or any other large breed. So naturally, I know how pitbulls can be.
I'm scared of what will happen when Kasey grows up. Right now her and Betty are hanging out and playing normally, and Betty is very excited to have a buddy to play with. But Kasey is starting to bite and growl, and show other aggressive behaviors that are standard to pitbulls. I'm scared that when she grows up that she'll be a danger to Betty. I'm hoping we could prevent any form of aggression by bonding the two dogs while Kasey is still a puppy, but even the best trained pitbulls are prone to outbursts of aggression. I've seen what those dogs can do, and I don't want Betty to get hurt or killed.
What should I do about this situation? How can I prevent Kasey from hurting Betty? I don't want to keep Betty locked in the house at all times, and I don't want Kasey to be locked at all times too. I don't want anything to happen to my baby...
