A close family friend found kittens under her deck and asked us to help arrange the rescue, and my partner & I put her in touch with a local rescue that we know of. Afterwards, we went to visit the kittens at the rescue and fell in love with one of them--she was sweet as anything and we couldn't wait to take her home.
A week later we got a text from the individual who runs the rescue saying the kittens are sick. They were still full of life, but were having serious stomach issues. The rescue has assured us they won't release the kittens until they are healthy, but they don't seem to be making much progress. The rescue wants to run some expensive tests on the kittens to try to figure out what's wrong (which we're fine with), but what happens if they don't get better? Or if this continues for weeks on end?
I feel like I'm committed to this kitten, and I fully appreciate the possibility that a pet may become ill and need medical help at any point in it's life, but I'm not in an emotional state where I can take on a pet that may not make it. Do I just tell them to keep running tests and cross my fingers that the kitten gets better? And from a more selfish perspective, it will be a lot financially to keep performing tests that do not result in anything. I'm not really sure how to handle this situation, and if there is anything else I should be doing or should be making clear to the rescue.
Any advice is appreciated!
