Killed my rabbit by doing the right thing :(

About two months back, my male rabbit died and my female rabbit was moping (both desexed), so I got a new buck. This fellow was a rescue and he was in a bad way, and under the vet's guidance I nursed him back to health and was ready to have him desexed (neutered). The vet had advised me to hold off until he was in good health, which he now was.

I'm using past tense because I found him dead this evening when I went outside to feed them.

I'm feeling down. I spent time yesterday and the day before cutting back the palm that grows next to their run so they wouldn't eat it, but didn't realise that a few leaves had fallen into the run, where the buck ate them. This variety of palm is toxic to rabbits. Ironically he'd still be alive if I hadn't cut it back.

This sucks.

Now my female is depressed again, she doesn't like to be alone and she had re-bonded, she bonds easily. I've been in contact with a local pet farm and they have some babies available so it's not like I can't get her another buddy, but I'm starting to lose confidence in my ability to care for animals, which sucks because I JUST FINISHED NURSING HIM BACK TO HEALTH!!! He had been severely neglected prior to me taking him in. He was underweight, had fur missing, had a bad scaly patch on his back, and had a torn ear and infected eye.

At least now I know what killed my other buck. Some of the lower leaves were probably within his reach.

Note: They're in an outside run because I'm renting and my landlord won't allow rabbits inside. They are vaccinated and have ample room, fresh hay, and shelter.
