New cat owner trying to manage odor of litter boxes

I've recently adopted a cat (1 year) which I admit to my self may have been a hasty decision but I did prepare things before hand. This is my first time being a cat owner,. But not a first time pet owner, had a dog who passed last year sadly due to old age and back problems.

I live alone in my own apartment and I figure a cat fits my personality and living style the most. So far the actual cat has not been a problem with me. She has warmed up very quickly and causes no issues she's very cute and likes to be pet sometimes. Although I think she might have allergies, as she has a congested nose and shakes her head in a twitchy way, maybe the air fresheners are agitating her?

My biggest problem is the litter box. I definitely did not enjoy the thought of a litter box at all. I picked up the scoopfree ultra self cleaning box and she did take onto it fast. I'm not sure if I'm underestimating the odor of cat poop but the disposable litter tray in this thing is suppose supposedly go unchanged for weeks. But I find that the any poop my cat makes in the box will smell until I go in and remove it.

I wouldn't describe the smell as awful it's definitely just poop but it's definitely ruining my experience and I'm not sure what to do to make this better. I have a forever tray coming in soon for the machine and I bout a bag of fresh step scented crystal litter. I just really want to reach a point where the odor is just much more contained.

A friend of mine supposedly just uses candles and plug ins and uses the same machine so I figure maybe the odor control just sucks. But I doubt that's the case considering all the reviews I read.

Any tips welcomed.

Also any idea how to get use to the fact that it seems like I may have less friends over/ sleeping ovee just because they are allergic to cats? I understood this consequence when I adopted the cat but I also don't want to become more lonley (in terms of human connection) because of peoples allergies.
