Should I adopt two male kittens or one male & female kitten?

I’m thinking of adopting two kittens. There’s a male pair and a male & female pair.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of pairing? Is it better if they’re they same sex or opposite sex.

Each pair will be from the same litter. Approx 4 months old.

Some background info: I’ve only ever had one cat, a male cat for close to 10 years he was very much loved and well looked after. He was also very gentle & shy but he loved people. Never heard him hiss at anyone or even at any stray cats that used to come in the backyard to steal his food. One day he disappeared and never came back. This was two months ago. We’ve put our flyers, called vets, posted in our local lost & found Facebook page & nothing. The house feels empty & I have a void in my heart so I’m thinking of adopting a pair.
