Traveling abroad with my elderly cat

I'm planning on moving to Japan in about two years - my cat will be fourteen years old (I got him when I was in third grade and he was about six months old). I'm conflicted on whether or not it's in his best interest to move there with me. He'll have to go through about six months worth of shots, microchipping, multiple vet visits, etc before the big move, but I'm mostly worried about how the travel might traumatize him. He's a nervous cat under normal circumstances, so I'm really worried about flying with him.

I'm aware of all the nuances in immigrating pets to Japan - I'm not worried about quarantine (I can avoid that if I do everything right) or the cost. I'm 100% worried about his wellbeing, happiness, and health. He's currently in good health, and I would only make the move if he got the go ahead from a credible vet.

The alternative is to give up on moving to Japan, which breaks my heart because that's my dream. But I can't move and leave him for one to three years, that would be too cruel for both of us.

Thoughts? Does anyone have any experience going on 10 + hour flights with elderly cats? Or experience moving to a different country with an elderly cat? He would be in the cabin with me. Thanks!
