[vent] adoption application rejected because I didn’t feed my cats a grain free/raw diet...

I know some rescues are notorious for having insane adoption requirements but I’ve never even heard of my experience. Obviously I’m heartbroken not only because I really wanted this cat and was prepared to give him a loving forever home along with my two other cats, but because he’s been in their foster system for a long time and still hasn’t found a home. They even admitted on their page they have rejected a lot of applications for him because they didn’t find the right home, but the reasons they listed were because people were applying that only had one cat and he needed to be with another cat or because the cat was a senior cat. Come to find out they haven’t been transparent with their reasons for rejection.

I volunteer for local rescues for TNR and transport and often foster kittens I pull from the streets and adopt them out with help from the rescues. I would typically go through the rescues I work with but I found this cat from an independent rescuer I fell in love with. I put in an application for him right away. I was rejected because they said my cat’s diet was not suitable. I feed them mostly wet based, 1 Purina friskies can a day with a small amount of dry food in between their meals. They require that no dry food be fed at all, and that Purina wasn’t suitable food and sent me all of these grain free/raw options I would have to feed my cats. I explained to them my vet said my cat’s diet was perfectly fine and they told me my vet was lying to me. So the vet I have trusted with my animal’s care that I did extensive research on and went through hundreds of reviews before even making her my primary vet is now a liar. I digress...

It’s been debunked time and time again that grain free is better for cats. Even if it was, why keep a cat from a loving home over what brand of food? With so many cats needing homes and rescuing it doesn’t make sense to hoard a cat many people want to give a home to. As long as the home is loving the cat couldn’t really care less how expensive the food they’re eating is, it’s better than not having a home. It’s frustrating because I personally see the amount of cats on the street that need help and I try to rescue as many as possible and sometimes that does mean getting them friskies vs the expensive food since I’m taking in so many. But that’s besides the point. To know that some “rescues” are hoarding very adoptable cats for the sake of being picky over food rather than taking in ones that really need it is so sad. Obviously I’m gutted I’m not taking the cat home, but it makes me sad he’s just sitting and getting older in their care and they think that’s actually better for him than having a real home.
