My fiance & I have two cats--one an adult male, about 2 years old (let's call him Bran); the other is a male kitten, about 10-11 weeks (let's call him Muffin).
Now, when we first introduced Muffin into the apartment a few weeks ago, Bran was all-caps PISSED. He would hiss at and attack us, hiss at and stare down/scream at the kitten, and avoid all of us whenever possible. To our surprise, over the course of about a week or two, Bran changed his tune and their relationship changed very quickly. They became VERY close friends. They play together all day and night, Bran looks around the apartment for Muffin if he hasn't seen him in a while, and they sleep together every night on the same windowsill (why the windowsill when they could both sleep on the sofa or bed? beats me).
This is all great and dandy, but what we have both noticed over the past week or two is that Bran has begun to allow Muffin to push him around. When we give them their meals, Muffin will move from his food bowl (even though it is full) to Bran's and begin eating his food instead. Bran just stops eating, sits back and allows this. If we give snacks to both of them, Muffin will dive in and steal Bran's share before Bran has a chance to eat, then go back and eat his. Again, Bran doesn't defend his snack, and we have to physically hold Muffin to prevent him from eating Bran's share.
Frankly, Bran is a bit overweight and could afford to shave off a few calories here and there, but Muffin eats for two in minutes flat if we don't physically hold him back while Bran eats his meal.
Why is Bran allowing Muffin to eat all his food, and how can we prevent Muffin from always trying to steal it?
