I have a miniature poodle who's on the older side (11 y/o) and my boyfriend and I are interested in adopting a lab mix (around 3 y/o) from the shelter. She's around 46 pounds, not huge, but definitely bigger than the poodle. When we had a meet and greet before bringing her home, the dogs seemed fine, my poodle definitely prefers his space and it seems like she respected that. We brought them home and kept a close eye on them and aside from a few instances where the bigger dog got a bit possessive over a bone and wanting to play a bit too roughly with the smaller dog, everything has been going decently well. Recently though, it seems like my poodle starts to growl whenever she gets near him, which is weird because he'll often try to approach her to sniff her. We're fostering the lab for two weeks before deciding to adopt her, and it's been less than a week since the two have been together. I understand it can take months before dogs can get used to each other, but I just want to know if anyone has any tips on what to look out for to know if they'll get along. I don't want to have to return the lab to the shelter but I also don't want either dog to be unhappy at home. Thanks in advance!
