Me and my wife just got a new 2 month old kitten about three weeks ago. He's very sweet and super shy but he's been opening up so far.
We also have a 5 year old chihuaha/ Italian greyhound mix. I've had her since before we got married. For the most part she's been really sweet with our kitten. We waited about a week and a half before letting them roam around the livingroom together with our supervision. So far things had been great; the dog would chill with us and the kitten roams around and explores before chilling himself. However, the last two days we have had instances of slight agression. The first was two days ago when the kitten startled the dog and she sort of barked at him and we jumped in and that was that. They went back to there business. Then today I'm napping on the couch and my wife is sitting next to me when I wake up to her disciplining our dog. Apparently the kitten jumped up on the couch and wife went to pick him up and the dog attempted to bite at him. My wife pulled him away, and verbally disciplined the dog, but now they both seem terrified of each other.
I know I should keep them supervised for now and that's the plan going forward. Which is easy right now due to covid and me and my wife working from home. In the future though, when we're back at work, What can I do to help them get along a little easier? We live in a decent sized one bedroom apartment but it's difficult to keep them seperated for long hours. And at what age for the kitten should I start to think about possibly letting them roam the home alone together when we're out?
Thanks guys!
