I tend to often be gone from the place my cats live, so my mom is the one who’s been taking care of them for the past few years. So as soon as I came back, I noticed his left eye was super dilated (pupil was thin/sharp), and I pointed it out to her; she said she didn’t notice anything wrong with his eye until I mentioned it.
I immediately suggested to her to get it check out when she can, or if she couldn’t, I would. I’m gone from that house for about a week at this point, and I text her about his eye; my mom tells me it’s “better”, after sending a pic of his eye no longer being dilated, but rather his eye now being really red. I come back, and his eye is most certainly as bad looking as it was in the pic she sent. In direct light, I’m starting to see his pupil is now becoming somewhat translucent/cloudy.
We don’t know what even caused this, but I was told that it could’ve been because he got into a fight with the young, rowdy cat in the apartment below us. I don’t know how true that is. He’s a very happy cat, and fortunately his eye hasn’t seemed to sway his mood/attitude - granted, he still squints a bit when light is casted upon it. He isn’t lethargic or anything either, he still walks around as if nothing’s wrong.
I kept pushing her to bring him somewhere to seek treatment, but she’s passively ignored my pleas on multiple occasions. (The only reason why I haven’t done it myself is because I don’t have a car to bring him anywhere right now, while she does.) She eventually told me that she didn’t wanna go through the process of seeking treatment for him, as it would be too expensive, and ultimately admitted to me that she’s honestly just scared of the possibility that we may have to put Simba down.
Simba is roughly 12 years old now, and we don’t know if this is just an age thing or whatever. My main concern is that he could be in pain, and we just don’t know. I truly want what’s best for my cat and I know my mom does as well, we just have two differing views on the matter. Last thing I want for us is to fight over a cat we both love very much.
I don’t often make posts on reddit, let alone one’s regarding IRL issues, but I genuinely want your thoughts on this.
What do y’all think we should do?
