Hello all! I am in need of some advice on what I should do for my cat. He is 2 years old, indoor only, a domestic shorthair, and he’s about 16 pounds. My cats like to drink from the faucet, but he and my oldest baby aren’t the most coordinated. I’m assuming that they accidentally inhale a little bit of water because they almost always end up coughing and heaving as if they need to throw up (but nothing ever comes out). This usually only lasts for a few minutes and then they’re good. However, ever since yesterday when my cat drank from the faucet, he’s been coughing a LOT. It’s deep, and wet sounding. It sounds pretty typical and just like the cough he does after drinking, except he hasn’t ever coughed this much for this long before. I’m a little worried he inhaled a little too much water or something. I try to pat him on his back to get him to cough it out a bit more, and this works a little bit. It seems as if he’s coughing but just can’t get out what’s bothering him. Almost like when you have a tickle in your throat and you keep coughing until it goes away. I’m not completely sure if this is worthy of a vet visit, because I’m 99% sure it’s just related to him being clumsy while drinking. But what do you think? Is there any real danger that could come from him getting a little water up his nose/it going down the wrong pipe? Should I just let him cough it out keep patting his back until he gets a good cough? Thanks :)
