ADOPTED CAT "FRIGHTENED" OF TOYS

We have recently been adopted by a cat who used to live up the hill from us here in France. She is one of a litter of cats who have, I think, been pretty much left to their own devices, but, despite this, and unlike her brothers and sisters, she seems to be very sociable and has integrated very well into our household of two (husband and self) since she started making overtures to join us in the summer. At present, we have no other pets, having recently lost our dog. She is approximately 8 years old, and since, having discussed the matter with her previous owner, she has now been "officially" adopted, we have just had her spayed. As we are currently snowbound and she is, in any case, confined to the house to recover from her op, I have been trying to get her interested in playing with toys to give her some diversion. However, she seems to be totally disinterested in them ... almost to the point of being slightly intimidated. In every other respect, she seems to be a pretty laid-back customer, so I found this reaction quite surprising. I can only assume that she has never been interacted with in this way. Should I just give up and leave her to her own devices or are there any brilliant toys which will encourage her to play? (I have read often that dangly things on bits of string are a good way to encourage reluctant cats to play, but the fish on string that she has seems to alarm her more than anything else!) Suggestions gratefully received ... thank you!
