So this little guy was free at a local pet store with just the purchase of food and bedding. He was kept separate from the others because he was getting picked on by the community he was in. He is recovering well and drinking/eating too. Right now he is being housed in a 10 gallon aquarium with the essentials until I can afford to upgrade his set up. As far as interactions go, he will come out and eat from my hand before returning to his wooden house that he has successfully buried.
I've read that gerbils are more social and easier to bond with if they have a companion, so I do plan on introducing him to a friend once his cage is larger and he is mostly healed. Some things I'd like advice on are what sort of set ups would be good for him? What are things that gerbils like and don't like? What are some good ways to bond with your gerbil or to get your gerbil comfortable with you?
The other thing I'd like advice on is how to choose a companion for him and how to introduce the two to each other. Since my gerbil is a boy, I'd want to get another male gerbil in order to avoid the babies. I'm wondering what sort of behavior to expect and what to watch out for. I would also want to know how to bond with both gerbils as a pair and how that differs from it being solo.
Any advice is appreciated!
