Are pets usually calm before euthanasia?

I had to get my cat put down due to heart and lung issues and he usually hates car rides and going to the vet but since he was so weak he was barely crying on the way for the last appointment that ultimately ended in him being put down.

Once we get into the room I hear my cat crying before bringing him in and when they bring him to the table he’s crying hysterically and panting not even really recognizing us. I thought he would’ve had pain medication or something to calm him down it was really traumatic and I felt so bad for him. I wanted his suffering to end so I asked the vet to please do it and then he went to sleep and gone.

I just feel so bad because we were waiting for three hours outside and his last moments were being alone, scared, and in pain. I usually hear of pets being really weak and calmly going. I wanted to be able to pet him and be near him one last time but now I just feel like his last day was horrible.

Anyone one experience this? Because had I known he would be in this much pain I would’ve tried and done it at home where he’s more comfortable.
