I’ve either been going to school full time or working full time the entire time I’ve had my dogs, so they were pretty used to spending the days alone. Then pandemic hit, so I was spending more time at home, and then a friend from school moved in last May. He got a full time job last week, so this is the first time my pups have had to spend most of the day at home alone all week since last March. And now they are so so needy. They both are in my lap or in my face the second I sit down (one of them is 45 pounds so it’s not great), they have to be physically touching me when we sleep (but they get jealous of each other, so one on each side, I have no room!) and they just generally need a lot more attention now. Which is understandable and mostly fine, they’ve had someone around every day for the past ten months and now it’s a big change. But it’s driving me crazy! I can’t sleep because they both need to be leaning into me, they are always in my face sniffing me, and are both constantly trying to be right next to me if I’m sitting down or laying down. There haven’t been any other behavioral problems, just extra clingy. I’m torn between trying to establish boundaries or letting them get the extra cuddle and personal time while they adjust. I don’t want this to become the norm, but I don’t want to try to discourage it while they need it if it will naturally peter out on its own. It doesn’t really feel like an excess energy thing where extra walks or something will help, but I’m open to all suggestions. Any advice how I should handle this?
