My boyfriend and I recently started spending more nights at each other’s houses and we have somehow absolutely failed at introducing his cat (male, 4) and my pug (female, 8).
Visit 1: We had the cat closed in a bedroom for about 15 minutes and gave the dog time to roam around the house. Then swapped and had the dog in a separate room while the cat sniffed around for ten minutes. We then introduced them with the dog on the leash. Dog was not aggressive at all and just kind of ignores what the cat is doing, but the cat stalks her all over the house. He yowls, hisses, stares her down, and follows her everywhere. He swiped at her once or twice, after that we had the dog sit in my lap to keep them apart.
The cat also got aggressive with me (I had met him before and he was an absolute sweetheart!!). If I leave my boyfriend’s side he follows me around yowling and hissing. I went upstairs and left dog and boyfriend downstairs and the cat followed me upstairs and latched onto my leg when I was trying to go into one of the bedrooms.
Visit 2: We brought the dog in and didn’t put the cat away first, the cat immediately started hissing, yowling, and following her around. Within ten minutes he attacked (that sounds aggressive...) her so we separated them. Later that night, the dog was on my lap and he came right up to us, boyfriend pushed him away. He came up again a little later and tried to attack her while she was on my lap. After that we put him in a bedroom for the rest of that night and the next day, he yowled and made a mess of the room but we didn’t really know what else to do.
We can’t stress enough how docile the dog is, she has zero interest in fighting and is not cornering the cat. The cat has space in the house to run away and be alone, but chooses to follow the dog around.
Because I only go up one or two nights a week, we’re not sure how to go about slowly introducing them.
We have no experience introducing cats and dogs and recognize we have probably made some majors mistakes so far. We want to ask for help before their relationship becomes irreparable.
