Cat with stones

We have an 11 year old cat who recently started peeing blood. Upon getting X-rays we come to find he has quite a few bladder stones and some have made their way into the urethra as well. Tried prescription food and he hates it and it also did not work. Tried blasting the stones back into the bladder with a catheter to remove all stones from the bladder at once. Didn’t work. Now we are being sent to a specialist that could cost 2-3,000 to treat the stones with ultrasound or laser therapy. Although this is technically a treatable issue I worry about his quality of life afterwards. He’d need to survive on the food he hates in order to keep the stones at bay and he’s already unexplainably lost five pounds in the last year even being on the food he loves. Are we wrong to consider putting him down? We don’t want him to live in pain with stones but also given his declining ability to keep weight paired with his age and the high cost of the procedure we just don’t know that the cost would “buy” us enough more time with him to make it truly feasible for our family. Is our vet going to think we are terrible people if we consider the possibility of these being among his last days.
