How do you care for a dog with bowel incontinence?

My dog just had both of his anal glands removed. He is having a hard time holding his bowels. When he does they are soupy, and sometimes stick to him, and it gets on other things if we allow him to roam the house. Understandably he hates it when anyone tries to clean his butt. He’s never been easy to groom. He’s also very hyper, especially right now when he’s supposed to be calm. He’s on a lot of medication to calm him, but they’re not working. He won’t sit still right now because his butt feels funny. He finds his way to wiggle out of towels and diapers.

As a last resort we went out and bought a crate. He spends a lot of time in there. Our house is small, he tries to jump on the furniture and the vet says he shouldn’t be doing that for at least another week. I’ve never taken care of a sick dog before, or a dog who has had this major of a surgery - one that would leave them incontinent afterward. I’m not trying to be cruel to my dog, I just don’t know a better way. Please, tell me what I’m missing.

Also, this isn’t expected to last forever. It should clear up in a week or two, maybe a little longer. I don’t want to make my dog feel alienated from the family, I also can’t think of another way to protect him from hurting himself and leaving poop everywhere.
