My roommate and their family own a 14 year old dog (I am not a dog person, it's a small white dog, female).
I noticed upon moving in with my roommate that no one ever walks the dog. It is the worst smelling dog I've ever encountered; before I came they rarely bathed it. When it needs to use the bathroom they let the dog out in the backyard by itself, and retrieve her when she starts barking. She ran away from the yard a few weeks ago after using the bathroom, and luckily she was returned home. But then my roommate and the family continued to just let her out in the yard to relieve herself, multiple times during a heavy snowstorm. My roommate also told me that the dog has rotten teeth, although I have personally not observed this myself.
Last week the dog started shivering and not eating. They took her to the vet and found out she had an enlarged uterus, which according to the vet was a result of them not spaying the dog. I asked my roommate why they had not done that, and he responded it was to "save $100". Now he has to spend $4800 of his own money for a lifesaving surgery for the dog, and his mother would rather them put the dog down even though the dog is no longer in terminal condition after the surgery.
I feel horrible for the dog. I have never seen a pet treated so poorly, and I would really like to do something to save the dog from these people. Would their treatment be considered animal cruelty? If so, what can I do to get the dog in the hands of an owner who will treat it better? Thanks in advance!
