Hi everyone,
Two nights ago I found an adorable and extremely friendly cat while walking (named him Simon). I was able to get him inside my home and gave him food, water, and a litter box. It took about an hour for him to adjust being indoors, but after that, he was curling right up to me while sleeping and showing me his belly and everything. He had some matted fur, a few bald spots and strange bumps all over his stomach. His fur looked extremely overgrown and he also had a few eye scabs.
I took him to the vet next morning, to scan for a microchip and thankfully he had one. The vet told me that they would keep Simon at the clinic while they try to contact the owner, and I handed him over. I’m based in Toronto so I’m not sure what the legalities are if I told them no and took Simon back home. They asked me if I would be interested in adopting him and I told them that it’s something my family would highly consider.
Anyways, this morning I called again for an update and they said they haven’t been able to reach the owner but they will try until Monday. Now I was fully expecting that once the process of looking for the owner is over, that my family could take care of all the vet bills and be able to bring him home with us. But they informed me that they will send him to the Toronto Humane Society and they will take over looking for his owner, and then adopting him out. I’ve told them that I’d like to be considered first for adopting him but I have very will faith in that happening.
I don’t know if THS is a no-kill organization but I would absolutely hate if they euthanize Simon because I would be more than willing to adopt him. If someone is familiar with the process of locating owners and adopting out stray cats in Toronto, I would really appreciate any advice or insight.
I might be overreacting but I don’t want anything bad to happen to Simon. Whether my family or another family can bring him home, or if he is reunited with his owner, I just want him to be okay.
