I don’t understand what the problem is, nothing has changed except this behavior. My door is always left open for him to come and go as he pleases. He has always slept with me in my bed, and lately he will start this scratching at 4 am, and will not stop until I’m up and moving around. He doesn’t like toys at all, seriously...I have spent money on the good ones, tried the cheaply ones, and even little rubber bands and shiny pom pom balls...nothing. He has 3 cardboard little bed things to scratch on, 1 rope covered scratching post, and a cat tower to climb, and yet he doesn’t care. He will use them during the day, once I’m awake, but at night he sleeps. He is 9 years old and this is brand new behavior, it’s been going on about a month now. My current job has me working from home, which starts at about 9:30am and goes until about 8:30-9:30pm, and in that time I let him lay on my lap, give him all the attention he could possibly want. He has access to food, water, and a litter box, all of which are fresh and/or refreshed every night before bed. Squirt bottles don’t work on him, he likes water. I have tried putting catnip out in the living room to see if he would like it maybe, and nothing..he doesn’t even care about it. I have tried treats, and ignoring him...it doesn’t work. Nothing in our household has changed for this to make sense other than him just being a jerk. I have had him since he was 6 hours old, had to bottle/dropper feed him every 4 hours back then and he is still my little buddy. If I knew what this was then I would fix it, or maybe take him to vet if there is something wrong. He hasn’t licked anything that would cause him trouble, because all the food is put away at night. He has a companion who he has grown up with and always gotten along with. Because my job requires 12 hour shifts sometimes, and normal adult life doesn’t just stop, I have to go to bed late, and this whole scratching thing is causing me to have to get up at 5 am after going to bed by 2-3 am. I can’t keep doing this, I can barely focus at work now because I’m so sleep deprived, I’m falling asleep at my desk on my breaks. We used to cuddle and lay right on my arm or in between my legs (or even sometimes on my stomach/chest which I loved), and he would sleep all the way until my alarm would go off in the morning, with no problems. He starts by scratching at the door and if I don’t get up, then he starts scratching and ripping up the carpet, which I hear and freak out about, because I am renting so I will lose my security deposit if he keeps this up. I have tried putting objects up to stop him from scratching, he either scratches those too or moves them out of the way! I gotta give him credit, he is a smart cat. He knows how to open doors without assistance, he will even turn on the bathtub faucet when he wants to play in the water. I’ve had many cats over the years, and I’m at a loss here, I need some help or something. If there is something wrong health wise, there is nothing I wouldn’t do for him, I just needs to know what’s going on. If anybody knows how to help, I’d be really appreciative!
