This is more of a vent than anything. It's really not a pet (or cat) problem either, more of a relationship problem, but eh, I don't know where else to put it.
So I already have a cat. Weeks ago, I decided I wanted a second cat, both for my own sake and for the sake of my current cat (who is super sweet, social, friendly, playful, etc.). My parents basically shut me down and said it's a terrible idea, were 100% against it. (by the way, neither of my parents have ever had a cat.)
Welp. I went ahead and did it anyway! Picking up the new kitty on Saturday. I am 100% excited for the kitty, no question. I am 100% dreading telling my parents, especially because I will be basically surprising them. With my other cat, I told them the second I placed the adoption deposit at the shelter and talked with them nonstop for days about how excited I was to pick him up. With the current one, well, it's been a total secret.
Also, since there are a lot of posts on here from children/teenagers disagreeing about pet ownership with their parents (who they live with) and the consensus on those is always "they're your parents, their rules, sorry" ... let me clarify.
- I am 30 years old.
- I rent my own apartment in another state (I live 1000 miles away).
- I have a well-paid full time job. Also, not that it really matters, but I have an advanced degree. So I've already been "adulting" for a while and can take care of my financial/career needs.
Like, yes, I know. I should NOT even be worried about this. I'm a fully independent adult in every sense of the word. But my parents are very involved in my life, and while there are a lot of pluses, sometimes they are SO judgey about my choices. How I do my makeup, what I do and don't eat, what kind of music I listen to, etc.
So I can only imagine what kind of judgement I'm going to get for bringing another life into my home. Sure, I can deal with it, but it's not going to be fun. I KNOW I'm going to get a ton of shit for adopting a second cat, and it'll be even worse because I've "kept it a secret."
So. Aghhhh. Can someone make me feel better with crazy pet+family stories? :D
