Very affectionate cat?

I recently adopted a cat in October (it's now January) and I've had cats before. My family says I'm the animal person. Anyways most pets I've had have been when living with family. I'm 23 and moved out at around 18, and me and my boyfriend of 6 years decided to adopt a cat together. The last cat experience I had was my cat sassy, who was mostly independent, but would not mind being pet if you came across her around the house. She never would actively seek out attention. But the loving boy we adopted in October (we named him Rogue) adjusted to our home alarmingly quickly. He hid behind the toilet for a few hours, but I was able to lovingly coax him out and by the end of the night, he had adjusted to the entire kitchen and bathroom. Now, as of January, 4 months later, and whenever we sit down, he jumps in our lap. He purrs and drools and melts on us. He's always trying to get as close to our chest as possible. Now I'm not complaining at all. It's absolutely lovely. But I was wondering what causes such a different personality???? We had him checked by a vet when we got him and he said he looks healthy other than being underweight. He was found wandering, no chip, no collar, someone was putting food out every night for him. They checked his teeth and said they're suprisingly healthy considering. So I'm not really concerned on the drooling. Just very odd to me, I've never had a cat this affectionate. And I've had quite a few cats in my childhood.
