So on January 25th, I adopted a 6 month kitten from a cat adoption agency that told me the cat had been a stray and possibly had been a feral cat. They did not tell me the feral part until after I adopted her which would've been important to know since I believe there is a distinction between the two as far as the cat's socialization goes that hugely impacts their personality. So, here is my dilemma.
The cat for sure does not allow herself to be picked up EVER. Fine, I respect that and do not force it. I keep her constrained to one room so as not to overwhelm her. I have only been able to pet her very few times because 95% of the time, even though she has been in our home for almost a month now, will hiss at us. She does not try to swat us with her paw but she will just corner herself and stay there for HOURS UPON HOURS. She will only move from that position for the essentials, food/drink and eliminating herself and then go back to her little corner and just stay there.
She does NOT react to toys ( I have tried laser light, crinkly balls, dragging a string, the feather teaser - NOTHING she does not react. She looks at them and follows them with her gaze but will NOT budge and play.
I took her to the vet to make sure she does not have any underlying health issues but everything came out okay. Even the vet said that this was one of the most extreme cases she had seen of a scared and guarded cats.
I really do not know what to do anymore. It is hard to build a relationship with a cat that clearly shows zero interest - almost a month later and if I try petting her she hisses so of course I back away. I already tried the whole reading to her, I have even played classical music, feliaway to NO AVAIL.
Is there ANY hope? Can anyone share any success stories of cats that took a long time to warm up? I do not want to be negative but I just am beginning to lose hope.
