Apparently, I'm neglecting my cat... thoughts?

Okay, so about last Monday I noticed my cat grinding his teeth. I was home all day and only saw him do it one time, lasting about 10 seconds. I googled it and read that it could be pain/nausea-related, but otherwise he was acting exactly the same - eating, using his box, playing, and super active. So, I didn't really think twice about it until about Wednesday when he was still doing it - again, I'd only see him grind once, maaaybe twice a day, and for a very short period of time. Also around Wednesday, his litterbox habits started to change a little bit - I monitor his litterbox like a hawk, and I noticed that he was peeing less (maybe 2x a day instead of 4+) and pooping less (every 36h or so instead of every morning like clockwork). But his stool was normal, as was his peeing behavior/urine stream (yes, I'd literally watch him). And again, he was still eating and acting like his normal self.

Still, Thursday morning I called the vet and made an appointment for this past Wednesday (the soonest they had). Mentioned it to a friend and got chewed out for being a lazy and neglectful owner for letting him suffer in pain for soooo long. According to her, I was supposed to push for a much sooner and more emergent appointment for my cats once a day tooth grinding and slightly altered box habits, or find a new vet entirely if they couldn't accomodate me any sooner. Nevermind that I worked 12 hours a day Friday-Tuesday.

So, please tell me, am I a neglectful pet owner?
