My boyfriend's roommate of over 1 year has a cat. The roommate is a terrible pet owner - he's always at his girlfriend's place, and the cat stays back at home. Even when he does come home for a night over a week, all he does is "hey cat", and then goes to his room while the cat stays in my boyfriend's room. My boyfriend is the one who feeds her everyday, plays with her, and has obviously grown very attached to her. The roommate doesn't even clean her litter, gives her absolutely 0 company. She sleeps in my boyfriend's room every night.
The lease of the apartment is coming to an end and both my boyfriend and the roommate are in the process of moving out. The roommate is still never home, and my boyfriend is in the process of moving his stuff. The first night of moving he texted his roommate that he was gonna stay the night in his new apartment and that someone would need to feed the cat, the roommate said ok, but never came home for the night or the next day. (This has happened before) My boyfriend and I had to go feed her while she spent the night alone. The cat is super playful and it saddens us to see her being ignored and not loved like she deserves. We would gladly keep her, but she belongs to the roommate. Not sure what the right thing to do here is. We don't want her to go unfed and just lead a sub par life because her owner doesn't give a shit.
