My 4 1/2 year old male has been diagnosed with diabetes today. My cat was the type to lose weight and get lethargic. He’s a long hair cat so I didn’t noticed until I decided to shave him because he started getting mats in the fur. He’s very skinny atm.
The vet has given me Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets OM Overweight Management Formula. Which was confusing since they have a diabetes version as well. But they found very high fat lvls in his blood and his sugar lvls were high as well so I’m guessing that’s why. (This food is a prescription only food.)
They want to start him on Prozinc insulin which is about 100$. Also, I want to get him a monitoring kit as well so I can keep track of his blood sugars too.
I was wondering if there is anyway I can save any money at all. Food wise and diabetic strips. It’s hard finding a low carb dry food that’s less than 40$ and the strips are 50 for 50$. I’m mentally burnt out writing this so idk if I’m making any sense right now. Been very stressful today. Just want to know what else I can do to help him.
I’m also switching vets after I get some meds in hand. I just don’t agree with how the vet I’m going to now runs things covid wise and professionally. They weren’t my first choice but I didn’t expect it to be diabetes either. :(
