Hi there. Not much of a poster but I need some advice. I’ve had my lovely cat for just about two years and I love her very much, sleep with her every night and everything, basically she’s been my roommate.
I am about to move apartments and currently living in a hotel (waiting for new apartment to move in but had to give up the old one) so currently my cat is being looked after a family friend (single mother with a 17 year old and a 10 year old kid).
Anyways. Two days ago I got accepted into a residency program (as an MD) for a 4 year program in another city across the country basically. I never once doubted not taking my cat with me, but the family taking care of my cat have been amazing with her and they’ve insinuated that they’d love to continue taking care of her.
Now this is where my question comes in. I hate leaving her behind by all means, but a friend of mine literally asked me if I can be a better companion to my cat than that family right now and I was conflicted. I don’t know what’s better for my cat because in case you don’t know residency is basically living in a hospital due to huge hours load and night shifts and zero down time etc, and it’ll be that way for 4 years.
Has anyone gone through this? Literally give a cat up because of a more “dedicated” home? Or am I overthinking this? Is there such a thing as a better home 🥺.
Edit: should mention I live (and will continue) living in a small apartment but just enough for the both of us.
