Cat diagnosed with Injection Site Sarcoma — any tips/advice will be much appreciated

Hi all,

My cat, Cookie, has been diagnosed with Inject Site Sarcoma, a very rare type of tumor since January. Any advice/tips will be much appreciated.

For those who are not familiar with what Injection Site Sarcoma is, generally speaking, is a type of tumor that develops on the site where the vaccine was given, all injection site sarcomas behave as locally aggressive tumors with a modest chance of spread to distant sites in the body, and it is a fatal decease.

You can learn more from here:https://cvm.ncsu.edu/nc-state-vet-hospital/small-animal/oncology/feline-injection-site-sarcoma/

Cookie has his leg removed in order to prevent the tumors from spreading, unfortunately, the margin is not clean so we will have to follow up with radiation therapy.

I am looking for:

  1. Anyone who has been through the same situation can share some advice/tips for me?

  2. Any tips for tumor/cancer care for cats? I read online that cancer cells love carbohydrates, so I am feeding Cookie raw diet (mainly chicken breast) now.

  3. Any tips for dealing with the insurance company? I was surprised to find out that my insurance company only covers around $2000 and the entire treatment will cost me around $23000.

On one hand, I am angry that this terrible thing happened to Cookie, the little angel who accompanied me to make 2020 less intolerable, who always brighten my day with his exuberant appetite (yes he is an orange cat), and I am very frustrated of how little the insurance company (Nationwide) covers and how vague their policy is; I am also very angry that my fiancé can't be here with Cookie and I because of his visa situations (we are both not citizens).

On the other hand, I am grateful that I still have a job, I am healthy, and with the progress of medical technology, radiation therapy for Cookie can be done in 1 time compared to previously, 18 times (which will be a living hell for cats and very bad for his health).

It has been definitely been a roller coaster journey for me, just want to see if anyone out there had a similar experience to share and we can support each other.

Thank you for reading.
