Cat newly diagnosed with asthma. Any similar experiences/advice?

My three year old female cat just got diagnosed with asthma last Tuesday after having an asthma attack.

After thinking about it, I believe that she's likely had asthma for a long time and I feel guilty for not realizing it sooner. She's always had regular vet visits, but I believe that I accredited her symptoms prior to last week to seasonal allergy and normal gross cat stuff (like puking up hairballs).

Anyway, she received two injections - a steroid and an antibiotic. She almost immediately improved, but still had some minor symptoms, like breathing strenuously for a moment after moderate to intense play, and when I reported that to our vet the next day, she seemed pleased. However, I noticed that she is struggling a bit more today. It isn't severe enough to constitute as an emergency, but I am keeping a very close eye on her. I plan on contacting my vet ASAP on Monday. I've also taken a number of precautions at home, such as buying dust free litter, taking extra care in vacuuming and dusting, and we run a humidifier because our gas heat makes the air super dry. I also plan on purchasing an air purifier.

I understand that the typical route of treatment is oral steroids, which frightens me because of potential side effects, and bronchodilators. Has anyone had any experience with how effective these treatments are? I am also planning on trying some holistic treatments (but nothing questionable), like adding some omega 3s to her food.

I'm very concerned and anxious. I just want her to have the best quality of life possible. Are there any other folks out there who are parents of asthmatic kitties? What treatments do you guys use (and if you don't mind sharing, what does treatment cost you)? How is your cat fairing with treatment? Any and all advice is appreciate?
