Go slow or fast when bathing cats?

I am giving my cats flea baths every other week while working on permanently de-fleaing the home.

My question is, would it be better to do the washing/rinsing very quickly? We use warm water, try to soothe them, try to pour the warm water on slowly, massage it in, etc... But you would think we're trying to abuse them horribly with the noises they make.

Would it be okay to do it faster? Set the cat in the tub, pour the water + flea shampoo onto the cat, quickly rub/lather the body and then do a fast rinse with clean water after? Would it be like ripping a bandaid off?

I am not sure if it is more stressful to do the wash/rinse fast and dirty, or slow and "gentle". I am starting to think that just dumping water, lather, then dumping water to rinse would be easier.

Any advice is welcome, thanks!
