I have an idiopathic seizure husky. He is only 3 years old. Before getting medicine, he has been having seizures once a couple months. But recently with medications, it is on about a 2 week schedule for seizures. We saw a vet last August because he was having multiple seizures in a day 5 was the most. The vet prescribed us Keppra tablets 500mg. He takes it 3 times a day every 8 hours. He started getting bad post behaviors after his seizures starting October 31 2020.
His seizures varies in time, running from 3-5 minutes. It takes him about 30 minutes to 1 hour to come back to normal. After his seizures he isn't himself and gets wild. He starts biting everything he can get a hold of. He bit the walls, the cage's fence, TV, and his mouth got bloody. His seizures are usually happening when he's sleeping, sometimes around 4:30-5am, 8pm-9pm range. Rarely gets them throughout the day, but it's happened a few times.
I am not sure what to do, my parents might want to euthanize him because he is out of control once he wakes up. It's hard on our family and we have smaller dogs in the house that I don't want to get hurt. I also don't want to risk a human injury so that's why I don't know if having him get rehomed/adopted is a good option?
I strive to give him the best life he can get. He is still so young, only turning 4 years old in April. I walk him everyday, give his medications on time. I've tried a prescription diet called Purina neurocare. Blue buffalo is his regular diet.
We want the best care for our husky. I would like to find him a new home but I'm worried no one will want a regularly seizure prone dog. I know he might need to see a neurologist, but that is not in my budget. I got his blood work done and vet says the levels are looking good. Vet always just recommends to increase the dosage of Keppra that he takes. 1 & 1/2 every 8 hours, 3 times a day. It doesn't seem to help because he is still frequently getting the seizures and the seizures are still bad. I'm not sure what's causing the seizures.
I would appreciate anyone's advice, I am lost on what to do. Would you think it's possible to rehome him? Would it be best to euthanize him since he gets very wild with biting afterwards.
If you made it this far in reading my post, thank you. If you skimmed through it, thank you. I really truly appreciate it. It's been a tough start of the year.
