Hedgie Unwell, Any Advice Welcome

Our poor hedge is having a hard time, and any advice/opinions as to what might be going on are welcome (I realize most of you aren’t veterinarians, but while bearing that in mind, I would still like to receive tips, ideas, etc.).

Here’s the story: my hoglet (soon to be three years old) is currently not in good shape. He’s extremely weak, to the point of mostly just spending his days in his tree trunk log flopped on his side, eyes open, looking despondent. He has a hard time hauling himself over to his food and water bowls; he makes the effort to reach them, but with great difficulty. We’re not sure what is wrong with him. The symptoms leading up to his current state don’t seem to make sense: a few months ago, his right back foot became extremely swollen, causing him to limp. We assumed this was the start of W.H.S., and took him to the vet. The vet couldn’t tell much (I realize W.H.S. is only diagnosed post-mortem, but we were hoping they could maybe give tentative confirmation or not based off his symptoms). Nonetheless, running off the assumption this was probably the beginning of W.H.S., we expected the rest of his legs would begin following suit; but they never did.

However, his condition has deteriorated, particularly in the last week. We’re now thinking maybe something completely unrelated to the leg is wrong with him (maybe a tumor?), but, I feel like a tumor on a creature his size would be physically visible/there would be a bulge. We’re considering taking him to the vet again, but think it’s likely going to be like last time; no clear understanding or guess as to what’s happening. Not much is known about hoglets as it is (relative to other animals), and we wouldn’t want them to put him under to x-ray him because we are a bit scared as to how anesthesia would affect a creature that tiny (one of our small dogs had surgery a while back and the anesthesia had side effects).

Any ideas as to what could be going on and how best to proceed? Any and all thoughts appreciated.
