I've had my cat (~11 months old) for about six months now and he's had recurring ear infections nearly the entire time. Apparently, he was found stray and had ear mites that were treated before I adopted him. I've now brought him to two different vets and here's what's happened:
The first vet said he had yeast in his ears, cleaned them, and prescribed an antibiotic/anti fungal/anti yeast ointment (Entederm) for about a week. It seemed to slow down the itching, but about a week after finishing the treatment, he was back to the same scratching and head shaking. The same vet then said it was probably allergies (did not specify what from) and said to continue the same medication for a week and add Claritin. The itching slowed down, but about a week or two after completing that treatment, he started scratching and shaking his head more.
After that, I decided to try another vet. They said allergies are unlikely with young cats, especially under 1 year old, and they found some bacteria in his ears. Apparently, his ears are pretty furry on the inside, which can make them more prone to ear infections, along with the fact that he previously had ear mites. They cleaned the ears and gave a one-time all purpose treatment that was supposed to work over the course of two weeks. After a week, it looked like there was little to no progress, so now he's on another antibiotic ear ointment. They said if it doesn't improve after another week or so, to bring him to a pet dermatologist for allergy testing, which I'm guessing will be expensive.
Has anyone else had experience with cats having ear infections or have any insight into what might be happening? I'm really tired of constantly medicating my cat and bringing him to the vet, and would like him to just be comfortable.
