I recently (about a month ago) adopted a 1-2yo cat from a foster rescue after talking with them and visiting her a couple times at the foster home. I love her to death but she’s so much more high energy than I expected—the foster described her as playful but calm, relaxed, comfortable being on her own. This last part was important to me because I live alone in a decently large 1bd apartment but will probably be moving for grad school next year and feel that I don’t have the space and resources for 2 cats, and I was very specific about this with the adoption agency because I didn’t want to put a cat in an unfair situation. In hindsight I think their judgment didn’t really make sense, as she was found with kittens and then placed in a foster with another kitten, so I don’t know how they would’ve judged her to be fine alone.
Like all cats she’s active morning and evening, the timing is mostly fine although it’s definitely disrupting my sleep, but she has an insane amount of energy all day, gets bored instantly of toys that don’t involve me, and has become incredibly vocal in a way she wasn’t at the foster, like a near continual stream of grumbling and meowing until I go play with her. I usually play 30+ minutes every morning and night—the only toy she consistently goes for is a feather wand type thing, and it’s 30 straight minutes of running and 3 foot jumps—and even after a play session she’ll lie on the ground for a bit and then get right back up asking to go again. I’ve tried a bunch of toys including automated ones and she gets bored within days of each one, and it’s starting to wear on me. I really want to keep her happy and wouldn’t dream of getting rid of her, but I’m increasingly out of ideas. Is this just part of a young cat thing or will she never calm down?
